Katrina!
Hi Guys,
This is what we can do to help. I received this email from the Student Body President and I encourage you all to donate and help the victims of the hurricane. They need us now, we cant wait anymore.
David
Friends,
Within the last 12 hours especially, I have been absolutely innundated with requests from students on what we can do to help victims and the relief efforts of Hurricane Katrina. I have personally received at least 100 emails from students with questions, suggestions and people just asking what SG is doing and what they can do to help. There are several things going on but here are some thoughts.
Many groups including Party on the Plaza, VSLC, Texas Exes, etc are planning events to raise money. This is absolutely needed and I commend these groups for that. We also need a strong, fast student movement to help.
What we NEED to do is get money to groups on the ground NOW. Don't just wait for an organized event to give help. Several organizations accept donations online and I want to plead with everybody to give to those groups and send a message over your listserves asking the same. People in New Orleans and surrounding areas cannot wait much longer on massive amounts of aid if we hope to save thousands. GIVE RIGHT AWAY ONLINE NOW! If we can spend $.99 for an i-tune, we can stand to give a dollar if not more online. Here's a list of
sites to do just that:
American Red Cross, http://www.redcross.org or (800) HELP NOW (435-7669); (800)
257-7575 in Spanish.
America's Second Harvest, http://www.secondharvest.org or (800) 771-2303.
Capital Area Food Bank of Texas, http://www.austinfoodbank.org, 282-2111.
Please send this message or one like it to as many listserves as possible. We
have to be fast in our response to this, the devastation is terrible.
